Decorations

Once you have decided on a theme, you will need to start planning the decorations. There are many different ways to go with this, but here are a few ideas to get you started.

For a winter tea party, you could use pine cones, evergreen boughs, and berries as decorations. For a more traditional look, try using pretty china tea cups and saucers, along with a lace tablecloth. Flowers, whether real or artificial are also a must for a tea party. Choose blooms that compliment your theme.

Setting The Table

Create a stunning tablescape that will wow your guests. Choose a color scheme, set out pretty plates and cups, and don’t forget the little details that will make it special.

When choosing your color theme, it is a good idea to pick one or two colors, such as green and pink. Then make sure each piece of china that you choose has at least one of those colors in it. Everything will then be tied together. The cups do not have to match the saucers or even each other as long as they have a common color or two.

You do not have to spend a lot of money on these pieces since an incomplete set of china is often very inexpensive or you may have some pieces already at home. You can also find inexpensive silver-plated teapots, long-handled teaspoons, platters, and other silverware. Your local thrift store will have some I am sure. Remember they don’t have a match either. Have fun and don’t try to buy everything in one day.

Try to have a place setting of cup, saucer, plate and utensils for each person.  You will also need a teapot, sugar and creamer for each table.

The most important part of your table setup will be a three-tiered stand for finger sandwiches, macaroons, scones and cupcakes. This is such a traditional part of a tea party and will serve as your table centerpiece. They are easy to find at discount stores and your bite sized treats will look fabulous displayed on this stand.

Some of your guests may prefer iced tea, so make sure you have a pitcher of it on hand. Purchase iced tea glasses if needed. Again remember, you can mix and match.

Food

Afternoon tea is all about the food. Plan your menu in advance as this will help ensure that you have everything you need on hand and that the party runs smoothly. Serve everything in bite sized portions. Cut larger items into smaller pieces and display these on pretty plates. Here are some tips to help you create the perfect afternoon tea menu:

  • Start with a selection of teas. Offer a variety of teas, including black, green, and herbal varieties.
  • Serve a selection of finger sandwiches. Popular choices include cucumber and cream cheese, salmon and dill, and egg salad.
  • Incorporate scones into your menu as these are a perfect afternoon tea snack. Serve plain or fruit-topped scones with clotted cream and jam.
  • A variety of sweet treats and fruit will complete your tea party menu

Kids Afternoon Tea Party

Hosting a tea party for kids is a great way to celebrate a birthday. Kids love to dress up so make the dress code part of the invitations. You can also set up a special kids table with fun activities to keep them entertained. Get the kids to bring a doll or Teddy to the party.

Serve finger sandwiches, scones, and cupcakes. For the sandwiches, use cookie cutters to cut them into shapes. Get creative with the decorations on the cupcakes. And instead of clotted cream, serve strawberry jam and whipped cream.
