What is The Sevens Game?

The Sevens Game is a fast-moving party game that revolves around one simple idea: avoid saying anything with the number 7 or any multiple of 7.

Sounds easy, right?

Well… just wait until the pressure’s on, everyone’s watching, and you’re trying to count out loud while your brain is screaming, “DON’T SAY SEVEN!”

It’s a mix of counting, quick thinking, and a whole lot of laughter when someone slips up.

What You’ll Need:

  • At least 2 players (but it’s way more fun with 4+)
  • A table or comfy sitting space
  • Maybe some snacks. Because snacks make everything better.

Basic Rules of The Sevens Game

The goal is simple: count from 1 upwards as a group, but skip any number that is a multiple of 7 or contains the digit 7.

So numbers like:

  • 7
  • 14
  • 17
  • 21
  • 27
  • 28
  • 35
  • 37
  • 42
  • 47
  • 49
  • 56
  • 63
  • 67
  • 70 to 79
  • 84
  • 91
  • 97

…are ALL off-limits!

Instead of saying these numbers, the player must say “PASS!” and the next player continues the count.

If someone:

  • Says a forbidden number
  • Hesitates too long
  • Says “pass” when they shouldn’t

THEY’RE OUT! Or they get a strike, depending on how you want to play.

How to Play The Sevens Game

Step 1: Gather Everyone Around

Have everyone sit in a circle or around a table where you can all hear each other. Designate someone as the scorekeeper if you want to keep track of wins and losses (or who owes cookies at the end).

Step 2: Pick a Starting Player

You can roll a die to decide who starts or just go clockwise from the youngest player.

Step 3: Start Counting

The first player says “One,” the next says “Two,” and so on. Sounds easy, right?

BUT… whenever the count lands on a number with a 7 in it (like 7, 17, 27) OR a multiple of 7 (like 14, 21, 28), the player must say “PASS” instead.

Step 4: Keep It Moving

You only get 2 seconds to say your number (or “PASS”)! If you take too long, stammer, or say the wrong thing… whoops! That’s a strike or an elimination, depending on the version you’re playing.

Keep the game going until someone messes up!

Example Round:

Let’s say there are 5 players.

  • Player 1: “One”
  • Player 2: “Two”
  • Player 3: “Three”
  • Player 4: “Four”
  • Player 5: “Five”
  • Player 1: “Six”
  • Player 2: “PASS” (7 is a no-no!)
  • Player 3: “Eight”
  • Player 4: “Nine”
  • Player 5: “Ten”
  • Player 1: “Eleven”
  • Player 2: “Twelve”
  • Player 3: “PASS” (14 is a multiple of 7!)
  • Player 4: “Fifteen”
  • Player 5: “Sixteen”
  • Player 1: “PASS” (17 contains a 7!)

And so on…

What Counts as a Mistake?

You can play it strict or silly, depending on your crowd. Here are the most common mess-ups:

  • Saying a forbidden number
  • Saying “pass” when you weren’t supposed to
  • Hesitating for too long
  • Saying the wrong number (like repeating the same number or jumping ahead)
  • Getting totally flustered and yelling “banana!” (yes, it happens)

You can give players one strike, three lives, or just kick them out, it’s up to your house rules!

Variations to Spice Things Up

Dice Roll Madness

Use a die to roll how many numbers you count in each round. For example:

  • Player rolls a 4.
  • The next 4 numbers must be said, going clockwise.
  • Whoever gets stuck with a “7 number” in their set must say “PASS!”

It adds a layer of unpredictability and is great for keeping everyone on their toes!

Speed Round

Want to make it harder? Set a timer for each player, 1.5 seconds to answer or they’re OUT!

Reverse the Order

At random points (or when a player says a special number like 50), reverse the direction of play! This throws people off big time and keeps the game interesting.

Add Movement or Words

Instead of saying “PASS,” make a silly gesture or sound. Think: clapping, mooing like a cow, or doing jazz hands. You’ll all be laughing so hard you’ll forget what number you were on!

Is This Game Kid-Friendly?

YES! Totally!

It’s perfect for:

It’s sneaky math fun too. Your kids will be practicing their counting and multiples without even realizing it!

Mom Tip: Younger kids may need a little help with spotting the 7s at first, but they catch on fast. And don’t be surprised if they get better than the adults…

Skills They’ll Be Practicing (Shhh… don’t tell them!)

  • Number recognition
  • Quick thinking
  • Concentration
  • Memory
  • Patience
  • Sportsmanship (a BIG one!)

Winning the Game

You can play until:

  • Only one player remains (last person standing!)
  • A set number of rounds
  • A player reaches a goal (like correctly passing all the way to 100!)

Or just play for laughs and snacks. Because sometimes, the best games are the ones you don’t take too seriously.

Theme It Up!

Want to make your game night extra fun?

Try one of these themes:

  • Pirate Sevens: Everyone talks like a pirate. Say “ARRR” instead of “PASS!”
  • Holiday Sevens: Use jingle bells or say “HO HO HO!” on the 7s.
  • Spooky Sevens: Say “BOO!” instead of “PASS” and dress like monsters.

Adding a theme makes everything more magical, especially for kids!

Why We Love The Sevens Game

As a Mom, I love any game that doesn’t need a million pieces or an instruction manual the size of a novel. The Sevens Game is quick to start, easy to learn, and guaranteed to get everyone laughing. And honestly? Watching someone panic over “twenty-seven” never gets old.

It’s perfect for mixed-age groups, holiday parties, and those “what should we do now?” moments when boredom starts to creep in.

So next time you need a quick, fun, and slightly silly game that everyone can play, try this sevens game!
