Outdoor Games for Kids (No Equipment Needed)
Let’s talk about one of my absolute favorite things, getting kids outside to play! If you’re planning an outdoor party and you’re wondering how to keep the little ones entertained without needing to load up on fancy equipment, you’ve come to the right place.
We all know that kids can get really creative when they’re outdoors, but it helps to have a few fun game ideas up your sleeve to make sure everyone has a blast.
Fun Kids Outdoor Games
Here are some easy, no-equipment-needed outdoor games for kids. These ideas are perfect for playdates, birthdays, or any outdoor hangout.
1. Freeze Tag
Okay, let’s start with a classic, Freeze Tag! This one never gets old, and kids love it every time. It’s so simple to play and requires zero equipment, which is a huge win in my book.
How to Play:
- Choose one child to be “It.”
- The other kids run around trying to avoid being tagged.
- If “It” tags a child, they must freeze in place like a statue.
- A frozen player can be freed by another player who runs up and touches them.
- The game continues until everyone is frozen or “It” catches everyone!
Why it’s fun: Freeze Tag gets everyone moving and laughing. Plus, the added element of “saving” your friends from being frozen adds a lot of excitement.

2. Red Light, Green Light
Here’s another tried-and-true game that has stood the test of time. It’s so simple, but the kids will love it!
How to Play:
- One child is chosen to be the “traffic light.” They stand at one end of the play area, while the other kids line up at the other end.
- The traffic light says “Green light!” and the kids race toward them.
- When the traffic light says “Red light!” everyone has to stop.
- If the traffic light catches anyone still moving, they have to go back to the starting line.
- The first child to reach the traffic light becomes the new “traffic light” for the next round.
Why it’s fun: It’s full of anticipation and excitement. The kids have to be quick on their feet, and they love the thrill of trying to catch the “red light” without getting caught.
3. Shadow Tag
Shadow Tag adds a new twist to the classic tag game. This one is perfect for a sunny day, and all you need is a big open space.
How to Play:
- Instead of tagging the person, the goal is to step on their shadow.
- When “It” spots someone’s shadow, they try to jump or step on it.
- If “It” steps on someone’s shadow, that player becomes “It” next.
Why it’s fun: It’s a great way for kids to practice coordination, and the added twist of focusing on shadows makes the game feel unique and fun.
4. Sardines
Sardines is like the reverse of hide and seek, and it’s always a hit! It’s a twist on the traditional game of hide-and-seek that’s guaranteed to have the kids laughing out loud.
How to Play:
- One child hides while everyone else counts.
- Once the kids finish counting, they have to search for the hidden child.
- When someone finds the hidden child, they quietly squeeze into the hiding spot with them.
- The game continues until everyone is huddled together in one spot like sardines in a can!
- The last person to find the group is the new hider.
Why it’s fun: It’s hilarious to watch the kids cram into small spaces, and the laughter is infectious as more and more kids pile into the hiding spot. It’s like a giant game of hide-and-seek with a silly twist!

5. Capture the Flag (No Flag Version)
Capture the Flag is an absolute favorite when kids are looking for a game full of strategy and action. While traditional capture the flag involves a lot of equipment, you can easily create a fun version without the flags!
How to Play:
- Divide the kids into two teams.
- Set up a designated “safe zone” for each team. This is where their base is.
- The goal of the game is to tag players from the other team and bring them back to your base without getting tagged yourself.
- Once a player is tagged, they must freeze in place until a teammate tags them to release them.
- The first team to tag all the players from the other team wins!
Why it’s fun: This game adds a bit of strategy, teamwork, and excitement. It’s so fun to see the kids work together to capture the other team and avoid getting caught.
6. Hot Potato Claps
Hot Potato is one of those games that kids can’t help but love. It’s fast-paced, silly, and the suspense is off the charts. Instead of a potato/ball this game will ‘send’ claps to another player.
How to Play:
- Have the kids sit in a circle.
- Start by playing music
- One player claps and then points to the person to their left. This continues around the circle while the music plays.
- When the music stops, the person clapping or pointing is out!
- The last child remaining is the winner!
Why it’s fun: The music adds an element of surprise, and kids love the race to pass the ‘object ‘clap’ before the music stops. It’s simple but super fun.
7. The Floor is Lava
This one has become a household favorite in my home! It’s a game where the kids’ imagination really shines, and the rules are super simple.
How to Play:
- The goal is to avoid touching the ground, which is “lava.”
- You can designate certain areas as safe zones (like benches, rocks, or trees) that the kids can jump to if they need a break from the “lava.”
- The game is timed, and you can create different challenges to keep things interesting, like jumping from one point to another.
- You can also add variations, like giving “lava” areas specific challenges (e.g., hopping on one foot).
Why it’s fun: Kids love the imagination that goes into it. The idea that the floor is “lava” makes everything feel more intense and fun, and they love jumping from one safe spot to the next.
8. Simon Says
I don’t think there’s ever been a kid who didn’t love a game of Simon Says! It’s a great way to get everyone moving and laughing, and it doesn’t require anything except your voice and imagination.
How to Play:
- One child is “Simon,” and they give commands.
- The catch is that the other kids only follow the command if Simon says, “Simon says…” before it.
- If Simon gives a command without saying “Simon says,” and anyone follows it, they’re out!
- The last person standing wins and gets to be Simon next!
Why it’s fun: It’s hilarious to see who gets tricked and when. Plus, it’s always a great way to sneak in some silly exercises like jumping jacks or twirling around.
9. Jump in the Circle
This game is like a mix of hide-and-seek and tag, and it’s always a favorite.
How to Play:
- Set up a circle in the middle of the play area (this can be set out with leaves, twigs, rocks or anything else you can find)
- One child is “It” and counts while the others hide.
- The hiders must sneak up and jump inside the circle without getting tagged by “It.”
- If “It” catches someone, they must run back and touch the can to free the other players.
- The first person to stand in the circle wins!
Why it’s fun: It combines sneaky strategies with physical activity, and the thrill of trying to avoid being caught makes it even better!
10. Ships and Sailors
This one’s perfect for a large open space, and it brings a bit of adventure to the party with its nautical theme!
How to Play:
- One child is chosen as the “Captain,” and they stand at one end of the play area.
- The other kids line up at the starting line.
- The Captain calls out different commands, and the players have to follow them. Some examples are:
- “Ships, ahoy!” – The players must run to the Captain.
- “Sailors, crawl!” – The players must crawl to the Captain.
- “Shark attack!” – The players must freeze in place.
- “Pirates, jump!” – The players jump on the spot.
- If the Captain calls a command and anyone messes up or doesn’t follow it, they’re out!
- The last player left standing wins and becomes the new Captain.
Why it’s fun: The kids love the silly commands and the chance to be a part of a playful, imaginary adventure! Plus, it gets them moving in all kinds of fun ways.
11. Duck, Duck, Goose
This classic is always a hit at any age. It’s a great way for kids to burn off energy and laugh along the way.
How to Play:
- Kids sit in a circle while one child walks around the outside.
- The walking child taps each child on the head, saying “duck” each time.
- At any point, the child may say “Goose!” and the tapped child must jump up and chase the walker around the circle.
- If the walker makes it back to the empty spot without being tagged, the chaser becomes the new “it.”
Why it’s fun: It’s fast-paced, silly, and keeps everyone on their toes. It’s also one of those games that works well for both little kids and bigger kids!

12. The Human Knot
This one’s great for teamwork, and it always gets everyone giggling as they try to untangle themselves.
How to Play:
- Have the kids stand in a circle and extend their arms, each holding hands with two different people (they’ll need to cross arms to make it more challenging).
- The objective is for the group to untangle themselves without letting go of hands!
- They’ll have to communicate and work together to solve the puzzle of how to untangle themselves into a circle again.
Why it’s fun: It challenges kids to think and work together. Plus, watching them twist and turn while trying to untangle is hilarious!
13. Worms and Birds
This is a fun game that gets everyone moving, pretending, and laughing at how silly they look!
How to Play:
- Everyone starts by standing in a large open space.
- The leader calls out either “Worms!” or “Birds!”
- If they call “Worms!” everyone must get down on their stomachs and wiggle around like worms.
- If they call “Birds!” everyone must jump and flap their arms like birds.
- After a few rounds, change things up and throw in some funny new challenges, like “Turtles!” where they have to move slowly while on their backs!
Why it’s fun: It’s hilarious to watch the kids switch from being a fast, flying bird to a slow, wiggling worm. The whole group will end up laughing, and it’s a good workout, too!
14. Follow the Leader
This one’s simple but always a crowd-pleaser. It’s a great way to let kids use their creativity while following the rules!
How to Play:
- Choose one child to be the leader. The leader does a series of movements (hopping, skipping, spinning, walking backward, etc.), and the other kids must follow along.
- After a set amount of time or distance, switch leaders so everyone gets a turn.
Why it’s fun: Kids love to mimic each other and get creative with their movements. Plus, being the leader gives them a chance to show off their silly side.

15. Nature Relay Race
Perfect for getting kids moving and connecting with nature, this relay race will have them running and hopping through a course made out of natural obstacles.
How to Play:
- Set up a course that involves tasks like running around trees, hopping over logs, crawling under bushes, or balancing on a line of rocks.
- Kids race through the course in teams, passing the “baton” (it could be a stick or a leaf) to the next person in line.
- The first team to finish the course wins!
Why it’s fun: This game taps into kids’ natural energy while encouraging them to work together as a team. Plus, the natural obstacles make it feel like a mini adventure!
