Looking for a fun and fast-paced party game that teens, adults, and families can all enjoy together? Say hello to 4 on a Couch! This game is a mix of strategy, memory, and a whole lot of laughter. It works best with a big group and is perfect for sleepovers, family reunions, youth group events, or just a chill Friday night with friends.

So grab some chairs, a couch (if you’ve got one!), and get ready to play this crowd-pleasing favorite. Here’s everything you need to know to play 4 on a Couch like a pro!

What You Need for This Group Game

  • At least 8 players (the more the better!)
  • A couch or four chairs that act as a couch
  • Enough chairs for everyone except one (you’ll need one less chair than the number of players)
  • Small pieces of paper or sticky notes
  • Pens or markers

Goal of the Game

The goal is simple (but don’t let that fool you!): Be the first team to get four of your players sitting on the couch at the same time.

Sounds easy, right? Not quite. There’s a twist!

Setting Up the Game

  1. Divide Into Two Teams: Teams should be evenly split and mixed up in the seating arrangement. Try to alternate team members around the circle.
  2. Arrange the Chairs: Place the couch or four designated chairs together on one side of the circle. Then, place the rest of the chairs in a circle around the couch. Remember: you want one fewer chairs than people.
  3. Name Draw: Every player writes down their name on a slip of paper. Then, fold them up and throw them into a bowl.
  4. Name Redistribution: Pass the bowl around. Everyone randomly picks a name that is not their own. If you accidentally draw your own name, just put it back and draw again.
  5. Keep it Secret: Don’t tell anyone whose name you picked! That’s your secret identity for the game. This name becomes your “identity” during the game.
  6. Pick a Starting Spot: Choose one person to be the first empty seat. The person to the left of the empty seat will go first.

How to Play

Now comes the fun part!

  1. On Your Turn: The person to the left of the empty seat calls out a name. (Any name, it could be a guess or a strategy!)
  2. The Named Person Moves: Whoever is holding that name in secret has to get up and move to the empty seat.
  3. Name Exchange: After they sit, they quietly give the name they are holding to the person who just called out a name (the one who caused them to move). This swap happens silently, and the names are never revealed out loud.
  4. Empty Seat Moves: The new empty seat is the one the moving person just left. The turn then passes to the player on the left of the new empty seat.

Rules to Remember

  • You can only say names (not descriptions or hints).
  • You can say a name even if it has already been called before.
  • Players can’t call out their own name (the one they’re holding).
  • No sharing or revealing the name you’re holding!
  • You must switch names after each move.

How to Win

The first team to get all four of their members sitting on the couch at the same time wins the game!

Tips for Playing Like a Pro

  • Memory is key! Try to remember who called which names and how people moved. That gives you clues about who might be holding which name.
  • Use strategy. You can try to bump players of the opposing team off the couch by calling names strategically.
  • Watch the swaps. If someone moved and gave away a name, try to track where it might have gone. The person who called out the name now holds a new one.
  • Keep a straight face. It’s harder than it sounds! Half the fun is trying not to crack up when someone calls your name.

Fun Variations to Try

Want to mix things up a bit? Here are a few fun twists:

  • Silent Round: Play a round where no one is allowed to talk except to call names.
  • Reverse Swap: Instead of the name-holder moving, the person who has the name that was called gets up and tells someone else to move to the seat.
  • Super Couch: Add two couches to the game. First team to fill both wins!
