Sevens Dice Game

Sharing is caring!

Okay everyone, this game is a keeper! The Sevens Dice Game is a super simple, wildly fun game you can play just about anywhere. All you need are six dice and some people who are ready to laugh (and maybe groan a little when their score goes down the drain).

It’s easy to learn, fast to play, and has just enough twisty strategy to keep everyone hooked. If your family loves games that are quick but clever, this one’s a total winner.

What You’ll Need for the Sevens Dice Game

  • 6 regular six-sided dice (yep, the ones you’ve got in the junk drawer)
  • A piece of paper or a score sheet
  • A pen or pencil
  • A flat surface
  • Friends, kids, or unsuspecting family members

And maybe a snack. Because everything’s better with snacks.

How this Dice Game Works

The goal? Get the most points in a round without letting too many of your dice get taken away.

Because here’s the catch: any dice on the table that add up to 7 must be removed. Every turn. No skipping. No sneaky hiding them under your elbow. If a combo adds to 7, it’s gone.

You decide how long to keep going, take the points and end your turn, or push your luck and reroll the remaining dice. Risk it and you could get a bigger score… or lose more dice.

The Basic Rules

Here’s how a full turn goes:

1. Roll All 6 Dice

Yep, just roll all six dice to start.

Let’s say you roll: 1, 2, 4, 3, 6, 5

Now look for any combos that add up to 7. That could be:

  • 1 + 6
  • 2 + 5
  • 3 + 4

In this case, oof, every single die is part of a 7 combo. So they’re all removed. You score 0 points and you are out for this round. Sad trombone.

But let’s say you rolled: 5, 1, 2, 6, 2, 1

Here’s what happens:

  • 5 + 2 = 7 → remove both
  • 6 + 1 = 7 → remove both

You’re left with 2 and 1. Now you have a choice…

Your Two Options:

OPTION 1: Stop and Score

Just add up the numbers showing on the dice you have left. In this case: 2 + 1 = 3 points You’re done. Mark down your 3 points and pass the dice.

OPTION 2: Keep Going!

If you’re feeling brave, you can keep the remaining dice on the table and reroll only the ones you removed (in this case, four dice).

Let’s say you reroll and get: 3, 2, 5, 4

Now your total visible dice are:

  • From earlier: 2 and 1
  • New dice: 3, 2, 5, 4

Now check again for 7s!

Let’s hunt for combos:

  • 2 + 5 = 7 → remove both
  • 3 + 4 = 7 → remove both

Now you’re left with 2 and 1 again.

What’s your score now? Yep: 2 + 1 = 3 points

Womp womp. All that risk for… the same score.

But sometimes you score big, sometimes you’re left with dice that don’t form 7s, and your total keeps climbing!

Objective

The goal is to end your turn with the highest possible score, based on whatever dice you still have in play that don’t get removed.

No 7s? You keep the numbers. All 7s? You lose them.

And that score is what you write down for your round.

How to Win

Play as many rounds as you want! You can:

  • Set a timer (say, 15–20 minutes) and see who has the highest score when time’s up
  • Play a set number of rounds (3 rounds, 5 rounds, 10 rounds)
  • Or go wild and play to 100 points

The person with the most points at the end wins! (Bonus points if they rub it in gently.)

Combos That Add to 7

Just a quick cheat sheet so your brain doesn’t melt mid-turn:

  • 1 + 6 = 7
  • 2 + 5 = 7
  • 3 + 4 = 7

And yep, if you have two 3s and a 1, that’s not a match. Combos must add to exactly 7, and you can only pair up two dice at a time. You can’t do 1 + 2 + 4.

Strategy Tips

1. Know When to Stop

Sometimes you’ve got a nice little score, say, 10 points, and only two dice left. Risking it might feel exciting, but ask yourself: Are the odds in your favor?

(And by the way, if you’re playing with kids, expect them to say “I’m going again!” every time. )

2. Watch the Dice You Keep

If your leftover dice are 6 and 1, they’re already a dangerous pair. If you reroll and land a 1 or a 6… you’re going to lose both.

Try to keep mismatched numbers that can’t add to 7 as easily.

3. Think Ahead

Look at your table like a puzzle: “What combos might happen if I roll a 2? A 5? A 4?”

You won’t always win, but you’ll feel super smart when you guess right.

Great Game for Kids and Grownups

What makes The Sevens Dice Game awesome is how it works for everyone.

  • Little kids can practice adding numbers up to 7 (hello, sneaky math!)
  • Older kids and adults get to play around with strategy
  • No one has to sit out or wait forever, turns go pretty fast

It’s also great for rainy days, family game nights, sleepovers, or even classroom math breaks.

Fun Variations

Want to mix things up? Try these:

Team Play

Split into pairs or teams. Each team takes a turn, and teammates help each other strategize.

Sudden Death

Every player only gets one round. Highest score wins!

Long Game

First to 50 points wins, but you must get at least 8 points in each turn, or it doesn’t count!

This Sevens Dice Game is the perfect combo of easy rules, quick rounds, and tricky choices. It’s a little math, a lot of luck, and way more fun than you’d expect from just six dice.

It’s the kind of game you can pull out during family dinner, bring on a trip, or play while waiting for cookies to bake.

And the best part? Every round is different. Every roll is a new adventure. And you never know when the dice will love you… or totally betray you. Now go grab those dice, gather your crew, and see who can master the sevens!
